Due to the FS12 bridge/road failure 1 mile past junction with FS13 (Schreiber’s Meadow) getting to Blue Lake has turned into a fun little multi-sport outing. Corey and I pulled out the car seats loaded up the bikes and left Bellingham around 7am. We met Grant along the way who had just finished retrieving his crab pots from Samish island. From the road closure to the Blue Lake trailhead is 6 miles and 1700 ft of car free gravel road. The road is in great condition and is mostly a consistent mellow grade that took about 1 hour to climb. We walked on alternating patches of snow and trail for the entire hike. We caught a glimpse of blue sky on the ride in that had me full of hope for great views and a cool off dip in Blue Lake, but alas, we were in the clouds all day and Blue Lake was almost completely covered in snow and ice. Nevertheless, it was an outstanding day in the mountains with friends and probably won’t be my last ride up to Blue Lake this summer.
